From 15 February to 7 April 2013 the 14th VIDEONALE will be taking place in the Kunstmuseum Bonn. We now invite all artists to apply for VIDEONALE.14 with a single or multi-channel video work.

There are no restrictions on the subject, but the works submitted must be not more than 2 years old, i.e. they must date from 1 Jan 2010 or later.

A jury of international experts will examine the entries and those selected will be presented in the VIDEONALE in the Kunstmuseum Bonn.

An international prize-jury will select the winner of the VIDEONALE award from the artists whose works are exhibited at VIDEONALE.14.

The closing date for submissions is 6 July 2012.

VIDEONALE

Founded in 1984, the biennial VIDEONALE today counts as one of the oldest and most renowned festivals of video art in the world. Participants include such trend-setting artists as Dara Birnbaum, Lynn Hershman, Marcel Odenbach, Michael Smith, Bill Viola, and others. To this day VIDEONALE sees itself as a festival of national and international video art, both for ambitious young artists and for established artists.

Exhibition
At the 14th VIDEONALE between 40 and 50 works, chosen by an international jury of experts, will be presented during a seven-week exhibition in the Kunstmuseum Bonn. They will be supplemented by a selection of video installations.

Festival
The numerous events of next year's programme are meant to tempt visitors to VIDEONALE.14. In addition to the three-day opening programme, a large number of lectures, discussions with artists, screenings, performances, workshops, and special presentations about artistic positions will take place during the seven weeks of the exhibition. Another feature of the festival programme is the VIDEONALE Party at the opening weekend.

VIDEONALE ON TOUR
Following the exhibition in the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the works displayed at VIDEONALE.14 will be presented in other international institutions as VIDEONALE ON TOUR. Works from VIDEONALE 13 could be seen at the Re:view Festival at Ars Cameralis in Katowice, Poland, at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (NTMoFA), in Taichung, Taiwan and at the Gallery of Modern Art Glasgow, Scotland.

WYNG Masters Award Hong Kong: call for submissions

The WYNG Masters Award, Hong Kong's first significant photography prize, was launched in May 2012 with a series of programs, a dedicated website, and an international open call for submissions of photographic works. This pioneering annual prize in photography firmly places Hong Kong, one of the world's most vibrant metropolises, as a leader in nurturing the growth of photography as an art form in Asia. As well as stimulating discourse on photographic practices—the theory and the history, particularly as it relates to Hong Kong—the WYNG Masters Award also aims to bring community awareness to a specifically chosen, socially-relevant topic of importance to Hong Kong and its people. The theme for the first annual award is POVERTY.

From 31 May to 31 August 2012, WYNG Masters Award is pleased to issue an open call invitation for submission of photographic-based work. Entry is open to both residents of Hong Kong and all other countries. Visual content of photographic works must be related to both Hong Kong and to the chosen theme. Finalists will be exhibited in Hong Kong in March 2013. A full-color catalogue will be published to coincide with the exhibition. The recipient of the WYNG Masters Award will receive HKD 250,000. An additional HKD 250,000 will be awarded to another photographer to develop the WYNG Poverty Project.

The WYNG Poverty Project is a component of the WYNG Masters Award program. The finalist with the most potential to contribute to the photographic canon on poverty through further visual exploration will be selected to develop the WYNG Poverty Project. WYNG Foundation trustees, based upon the recommendation of the WYNG Masters Award advisory board, choose the recipient.

A five-member, international jury panel comprised of industry leaders in photography, art, publishing, and non-profit will select both the finalists and the recipient of the WYNG Masters Award. Finalists will be announced December 2012. The recipient of the WYNG Masters Award will be announced March 2013 at the opening of the exhibition in Hong Kong.

The prestigious jury includes Zoher Abdoolcarim, Jehan Chu, Frank Kalero, Sze Lai Shan, and John Stanmeyer.

About poverty in Hong Kong
Poverty is a global issue affecting both mature and developing societies.

In Hong Kong, poverty is on the rise and is increasingly seen as a serious economic, social, and political problem in what is one of the world's most dynamic urban economic and cultural centres. Amidst great affluence, 18.1% of the population struggle to access basic goods and services—including safe and clean housing. These communities are at risk with long-terms social, psychological and economic implications that will reverberate through Hong Kong society as a whole. In 2012, images of the personal impact of poverty—along with the larger social consequences—are pervasive in Hong Kong. This new and troubling trend requires examination and discourse amongst all sectors of the population. In keeping with the mission of the WYNG Foundation, the WYNG Masters Award strives to provide a platform for discourse on this important topic for Hong Kong.

Ethnographic Terminalia seeks submissions for Audible Observatories, an exhibition to be held in San Francisco in November 2012. Artist-researchers, collaborators, anthropologists and other scholars working in art are encouraged to submit their proposals prior to July 15, 2012.

Audible Observatories makes a playful connection between research-based art and place-bound exhibition in order to animate a curatorial vision that foregrounds audio-centric works within a broader rubric of site-specificity. We conceptualize the audible observatory as either a mobile or a stationary site of perception that is sensible to others just as it is a place from which sensing the world happens. Audible observatories are points of sensory convergence. They are nodes where worlds perceived through the senses intersect and begin the labour of transforming independent events into knowable and meaningful claims. They speak and they are spoken to.

Audible Observatories will be a distributed public event in San Francisco with an amalgam of location specific points and zones of exhibition. We are looking for research-based audio focused works to exhibit. These might include digital media, image, and sound files, websites and other interactive media, video works where audio figures prominently. Sculptural and other works will also be considered. In some cases we may be able to support installation. As in past shows, we will work with our exhibitors (if necessary) to develop installations and short statements about their work which point to larger interpretive frameworks.

This project ties in with and is supported by the meetings of the American Anthropological Association and the Society for Visual Anthropology. A round table discussion featuring Steve Feld, John Wynne, Angus Carlyle & Rupert Cox has been organized and will be taking place during the course of this event. We also expect to be exhibiting work by these artists.

Ethnographic Terminalia is an initiative designed to celebrate borders without necessarily exalting them. Now in its fourth year of exhibition, it is meant to be a playful engagement with reflexivity and positionality; it seeks to ask what lies beyond and what lies within disciplinary territories. Ethnographic Terminalia is an exploration of what means to exhibit anthropology – particularly in some of its less traditional forms – in proximity to and conversation with contemporary art practices.

Griffin Art Prize 2012

The Griffin Art Prize is an exciting new award for painting and drawing, open to UK based emerging artists, graduated since 2005.

Ten short-listed artists will be included in a showcase exhibition at London’s Griffin Gallery in November 2012. Accompanied by a catalogue, this high-profile group show will be seen by collectors, curators and other art world professionals.

The overall winner will be awarded a six month working residency in The Studio Building, London W.11, to develop an individual exhibition for the Griffin Gallery in September 2013.

A selection panel will choose the shortlist and winner of the Griffin Art Prize 2012:

Ian Davenport is an internationally renowned painter, shortlisted for The Turner Prize in 1991.
Zavier Ellis is director of the gallery CHARLIE SMITH London. He is co-founder of ‘The Future Can Wait’, a museum scale exhibition of emerging artists organized in partnership with the Saatchi Gallery.
Deborah Orr is an award-winning journalist currently writing for the Guardian newspaper. Deborah recently contributed an essay to the catalogue of Sarah Lucas’ major retrospective at the Henry Moore Foundation.

The Griffin Art Prize is supported by leading fine art brands, Winsor & Newton, Liquitex and Conté à Paris, as part of their long term commitment to support new and emerging talent in painting and drawing. As well as the one person show, the winning artist will have a spacious studio to work in, together with a supply of materials from these brands.

Adjacent to the artist-in-residence studio is Innovation & Development, where chemists work to develop and test new fine art products, giving the winning artist access to technical advice and the opportunity to explore the science of art for themselves.

Guimarães 2012: Made-In International Competition

The enrollment period for the international competition of ideas Made-In is open until July 15th. The aim of this competition is to call to Guimarães artists and architects interested in reconfiguring five public spaces in the city of Guimarães beyond 2012: the wash houses along the watercourse of Ribeira de Couros. The competition aims at drawing attention to this social and architectural heritage of great simplicity and social value at risk of disappearance and also to attract sponsors for the construction of permanent works. 
 
On June 13th guided site visit to the competition locations will take place, upon registration at madein@guimaraes2012.pt. The venue is Palácio Vila Flor, by 14h30, and participants must provide their own means of locomotion. 
 
This competition is aimed towards art and architecture professionals to present ideas for four existing public wash houses under open call. Alongside there is also an open call for proposals for the construction of a new wash house – these invitations will be announced in due course. 
 
The deadline for requests for clarification was extended until June 15th and the deadline for replies to these requests until June 21th.

Foolish People are offering a limited time call for further submissions from artists working in all mediums to create artworks and installations for our forthcoming exhibition entitled VIRULENT EXPERIENCE.

VIRULENT EXPERIENCE is unique collaboration between FoolishPeople – [creators of ritual theatre and transformative experiences] -  and Conway Hall, the base for one of the oldest freethought organisations in the world.

This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase your work to a wide audience in an historic Central London venue throughout August 2012.
 
Centring on the exploration of human experience within a fictional future London on the eve of the 2040 Olympics, FoolishPeople will transform the historic venue into its dark mirror. This landmark of London’s independent, intellectual, political and cultural life will be re-purposed into The Museum of Virulent Experience.

In an age of increasingly ubiquitous monitoring and bureaucratic intervention into our daily lives, the world of 2040 promises a bizarrely intimate foreshadowing of an age where Information Prohibition has begun.

With every thought and experience monitored and regulated at  the hands of the Ministry Of Information, the Museum Of Virulent Experience is the ultimate forbidden archive.  Within its walls lies the entire banned Index of thoughts, emotions and desires which have been carefully archived and secured for your Safety, Security and Sanity!

There, your artwork will reside amidst a plethora of dangerous ideas and unregulated emotion.

In the bowels of the Museum, it will rest alongside the deep irrepressible core of human nature, deemed by the Ministry to be hazardous to stability in its inexorable quest against so called Virulent Novelty. It  may call into question all the evolution and devolution of ethics and morals.

It may explore the impact to the mind, imagination and free will of humans. It may explore power and authority, rebellion and benign paternalism, urban ferocity contrasted with village green pastoralism. The window is short, the urgency of your work  paramount – what will be preserved by the Museum in the face of this genteel crusade, this peculiarly bureaucratic ferocity?

We are looking for artists working in any medium to create a series of works that exist within the narrative and fictional world of the Museum of Virulent Experience.
We will also accept proposals for completed works that fit within the context and are pertinent to the piece.
All artists featured within the Virulent Experience exhibition will be included in the exhibition book published by Weaponized, this further explores the themes and context of the project.

The Brooklyn Museum invites Brooklyn-based artists with a studio in the borough to participate in GO: a community-curated open studio project.

GO is a new project at the Brooklyn Museum, taking place in neighborhoods throughout Brooklyn. During GO, Brooklyn-based artists are asked to open their studios to the community on September 8–9, 2012.

Community members registered as voters will visit studios and nominate artists for inclusion in a group exhibition to open at the Museum on Target First Saturday, December 1, 2012.

The uniqueness of having each work chosen by an eminent individual, unlike in a group selected show, has earned the exhibition an excellent reputation among art lovers and collectors alike.  Work is selected by open submission and also from artists invited by the selectors. The works of lesser-known artists are given the opportunity to hang alongside the work of more established artists helping to connect hundreds of new artists with new audiences.

Painting, prints, drawing, photography and sculpture are accepted, the only criteria being that works should not exceed 20” (50cm) in their largest dimension and that all works must be for sale. Artists may submit up to six works. An exhibition of selected works will take place at The Mall Galleries, London from 15 – 25 November 2012.

The Irish Museum of Modern Art Artists’ Residency Programme Open Call 2012

The Irish Museum of Modern Art is pleased to announce a new online application process for those applying to the Artists’ Residency Programme. Applications can be made online, through IMMA’s website, from Tuesday 12 June until 13.00 GMT/Irish Time, Tuesday 24 July 2012.
Successful applications will be scheduled to participate on the Residency Programme in 2013. Residencies range between two to six months in duration.

The Artists’ Residency Programme (ARP) is the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s (IMMA) studio / residency programme. The ARP provides opportunities for artists, curators, critical writers and art professionals to research and develop their practices, it supports both emerging and established professionals, working in any medium by application or invitation and is open to Irish and international applicants.

The ARP is a unique programme which is immersed in the urban context of contemporary Irish culture. Situated onsite at IMMA, this prime location offers a natural catalyst for creativity and dialogue. The Museum’s Collection, Exhibitions, Education and Community Programmes, National Programme, Talks and Lectures, and 17th-century architecture and grounds all provide a dynamic starting point for participants to expand and explore their studio practice and potentially develop new avenues of research where IMMA residents can tap into the many resources available to them.

ARP participants have opportunities to engage in ARP Conversations and Open Studio events and they get to showcase their ongoing studio practice or previous work made by them during their residency. The live / work location onsite at IMMA offers opportunities to participants to meet with the public, art professionals, the local community and colleagues to expand practices and discourses. The ARP also provides a professional platform for international artists to come and live in Dublin for a concentrated period of time within an affordable and creative context alongside participating Irish artists.

Artists participating in the Residency Programme receive a free studio and separate, complementary living space all located on site at IMMA. There are eight studios at IMMA, four loft spaces and four large ground floor spaces. There is a communal house called the Flanker Building which has five bedrooms, two kitchens, two bathrooms and can facilitate live-in wheel chair access on the ground floor. There are also three self-catering apartments above some of the studios. Resident artists also receive a small stipend.

Applications are evaluated by a selection committee consisting of members of staff from IMMA and external arts professionals. The committee bases their selection on the artistic quality of the applicant's work, the potential impact of the residency on the applicant's career, and the relevance of the applicant’s practice to the cultural context of IMMA and contemporary art.

4. Documentation most appropriate to your work
(i.e. digital images, audio/moving image work and/or written work)
5. Names of two professional references who are familiar with your practice

Remember that you will be required to register online prior to making an application. Applications can be saved and returned to up until the closing deadline. However applications must be submitted in time in order to be considered eligible for selection.
