Application fee: none
For its 2013–14 residencies, Fogo Island Arts is seeking proposals from curators for projects to be presented within the context of the organization’s Education Program. For more information contact info(@)fogoislandarts.ca. Deadline: June 1, 2013, for residencies starting September 1st, 2013.
Fogo Island Arts and its parent organization, the Shorefast Foundation, believe that the arts play a key role in helping to secure the future sustainability of Fogo Island and Change Islands, located off the northeast coast of Newfoundland in Canada.
Led by Strategic Director Nicolaus Schafhausen, Fogo Island Arts pursues this vision with a multifaceted approach.
Fogo Island Arts Residencies provide opportunities for artists and thinkers from a wide range of disciplines to live and work on Fogo Island for varying periods of time. All artists-in-residence live in heritage houses and work in one of four off-the-grid studios designed by architect Todd Saunders. Situated at different locations around the island, the studios and artists’ homes help connect artists-in-residence with the day-to-day lives of the Island’s local communities.
Artists-in-residence often undertake collaborations with Island residents. Recent projects have included films made with the participation of Fogo Islanders, and international designers and local craftspeople working together to create furniture designs informed by Outport ways of life. In many cases, these Design Initiatives are a source of income generation for artists, designers and the Island’s communities, helping to fulfill the social enterprise mission of the Shorefast Foundation and Fogo Island Arts.
Selected artists-in-residence present their work in the Fogo Island Gallery. A purpose-built 1200 square foot contemporary art space, the Gallery is housed in the Fogo Island Inn, opening in March 2013 with an exhibition by the New Zealand artist Kate Newby. Exhibitions at the Gallery provide an important opportunity for artists to share their work with the local community and international audiences. Our Publications program, created in collaboration with Sternberg Press (Berlin) creates a further discursive context for Gallery exhibitions.
The Fogo Island Dialogues are a roving series of conferences, held on Fogo Island and other locations. Featuring leading thinkers in their respective fields, the Dialogues address critical questions faced by the global community in the 21st century. The initial series of conferences, scheduled for July 2013, looks at the topic of “the livelihood and renewal of remote communities.”
