Leaving the security of university or college studios is a daunting experience for emerging artists. Finding affordable space to work from, establishing yourself as a professional contemporary artist and supporting your practice with little or no income are just a few of the hurdles faced by them.
neo: founded in 2008 by a group of recently qualified students from Bolton University, recognise that faced with what can seem like insurmountable obstacles many talented artists are forced away from studio practice in the years following graduation, unable to sustain their practice through lack of tangible support.
The artist led, not-for-profit studios has established a reputation as one of the UK’s leading contemporary arts studios, offering extensive project spaces alongside individual artists’ studios, workshops and galleries. As part of an ongoing programme of exhibitions neo: is now launching an exciting opportunity for new graduates, neo:graduates2013. The national competition culminates in a group show from which three artists will be invited to apply for the first prize of a twelve week residency at neo:studios. The prize, which includes accommodation, living expenses, materials, mentoring and critical portfolio reviews from a professional, plus ongoing support from the group will allow the winning artist to build a body of work to be shown as a solo show in late 2014. neo: believes they are the first artist led group to organise such an event and to offer such a valuable prize to a newly qualified fine artist.
Artists can find information on eligibility and submission at http://www.neoartists.co.uk/, along with full details of the prizes and residency. Submissions open on June 17th 2013 and the closing date for entries is 2nd September 2013.
