MASS SCULPTURE ART SCHOOL APPLICATIONS 2021/22 ARE NOW OPEN

We are delighted to announce applications are now open for our inaugural Studio and Off-Site MASS mentoring programmes for sculpture and our second year of the MASS Correspondence Course.

'Following on from the successes and contributions of Turps Painting Magazine and mentoring programmes we are delighted to launch MASS Sculpture Magazine and MASS Art School. Responding in part from requests from artists for a publication that reflects and investigates sculpture in a similar way to the discipline-specific nature of Turps Painting Magazine, and in part following on from the exploration of sculpture within my own practice, this is an inevitable development for both our publishing ambitions and mentoring led programmes. We continue to challenge the one size fits all, inch deep, mile-wide approach to art education that has developed over recent years largely for the benefit of the institution and has blunted the art school experience for both mentors and participants alike. I look forward to peer-to-peer critically supportive mentoring and engagement and a return to thinking with our thumbs.'

Mass Correspondence Course is an innovative distance-learning programme of online mentoring facilitated through critical, supportive written reviews by a dedicated mentor. The course is aimed at sculptors based anywhere in the world and at any stage in their career who want to develop or reinvigorate their work, whether recently graduated from art school or those without any formal arts education. MASS Off-Site Programme is an exciting new mentoring opportunity for London based sculptors who want to develop their practice through the same successful ethos employed by Turps Mentoring Programmes and wish to remain working in their own studio. MASS Mentors visit sculptors in their own studios for one-to-one tutorials, and participants develop a supportive network of peers across London, through group studio visits to each other’s studios, reviews, and seminars based at MASS Hub at Thames-Side Studios, and attending MASS artist talks. The Off-Site Programme will run in tandem with the Studio Programme. Find out more.

MASS Studio Programme will be launching in October 2021 at our new MASS Hub at Thames-Side Studios. Our new home for MASS will be in the heart of the largest single-site community of artists and creatives in London. Working in collaboration with the London Sculpture Workshop we will offer a number of on-site studio spaces and a flexible exhibition and talks space to enable us to build a sustainable community of peers and mentors. The Studio Programme will be run in tandem with the Off-Site Programme. Find out more.

The Core Programme will be led jointly by Nicky Hirst and Ian Dawson. The Core mentoring team will include mentors on the Correspondence Course and contributors to MASS Magazine (see website for more details) and supplemented with a vibrant programme of visiting artists and speakers across the year.

Manuela Moscoso will be presenting the work behind assembling the Liverpool Biennial 2021 which will unfold her perspective on curating, exhibition-making, and producing in motion with artistic practices. Manuela Moscoso is a curator, researcher, and critical producer devising and delivering exhibitions, public programs, and publications, independently or for organizations in Europe and Latin America, for example as Senior Curator at Museo Tamayo (Mexico City) or co-director of CAPACETE (Rio de Janeiro); and currently as curator at the 2021 Liverpool Biennial (UK).

Curatorial Practice at the Intersection of Academic Research and Public Display

In her talk, Joasia Krysa will discuss her curatorial work and interests that underpin it: her interest in technology, and curatorial practice as research and form of knowledge. She discusses her work leading the Exhibition Research Lab, an experimental research environment, and a public exhibitions venue at Liverpool School of Art and Design and she will also introduce her recent projects developed in the context of the Liverpool Biennial.

Joasia Krysa is a curator working at the intersection of art and technology. Her first curatorial software experiment was launched at Tate Modern in 2005 and published in Curating Immateriality (2006). She is Professor of Exhibition Research and Head of Art and Design at Liverpool John Moores University, with an adjunct position at the Liverpool Biennial. Formerly, she served as Artistic Director of Kunsthal Aarhus, Denmark, part of the curatorial team for Documenta 13, and co-curator of Liverpool Biennial 2016 and Sapporo International Art Triennale (SIAF) 2020/21. She is an international advisor for Helsinki Biennial 2021.

The Hopper Prize is now accepting entries for our Spring 2021 artist grants.

For this open call, we have increased grant awards to $3,500.

We are offering 2 grants in the amount of $3,500 and 4 grants in the amount of $1,000.

Grants will be awarded through an open call art competition juried by leading contemporary curators.

The Hopper Prize was established in order to increase the recognition of artwork created by artists and photographers. Our aim is to advance artists' careers by providing them with unrestricted financial support that is coupled with a platform for increased visibility. We accept submissions twice a year via an open call.

We are currently accepting submissions for the Spring 2021 grant cycle.

Grant awards are unrestricted and may be used any way the recipients choose.

When submitting your work, you will have the option to opt-in to be considered for possible Instagram features on our feed @hopperprize, where we currently reach an audience of over 55k. Our editors will be featuring select submissions on a rolling basis prior to the application deadline.

In addition to grant awards, our shortlist, and Instagram reach, we will be providing an additional platform for exposure via our online Journal Insights Into Contemporary Art. We launched this digital publication to give artists a new channel to amplify their voice while providing an in-depth look at their work, practice, and background. Grant recipients and shortlisted artists will all receive the opportunity to publish an interview to include any work of their choosing as a means of providing continued support beyond the open call.

Eligibility
The Hopper Prize is open to all artists age 18 and older working in any media. There are no restrictions on genre, subject matter, or media. We welcome entries in all media.

In his exhibition 5 Freigaben für Galerie Lethert, Düsseldorf-based artist Imi Knoebel presents paintings that take a radically non-representational and constructivist approach. Also on display are drawings and the edition "1000 Hasen", 2021, published by Galerie Christian Lethert.

Besides hard fiber and wood, in the 1990s Imi Knoebel also started using aluminum as a painting surface for his works, which are always located somewhere between picture and sculpture. The title "Bild 29.11.2019 - 1-5" of the exhibited works from the series of date pictures refer to their day of composition. They each consist of two or three aluminum elements; however, these are not layered on top of each other as in earlier works, but rather exactly abut each other. Imi Knoebel has painted each element monochrome with acrylic paint, creating moments of tension as well as a painterly whole. Despite their dimensions, the geometric painting-objects seem to hover on the wall, like the paint, which does not soak into the subjectile, but is applied to the aluminum like a second layer, revealing a powerful painterly brushstroke.

The pure reduction to form and color also characterizes the drawings exhibited in the gallery's basement. The works, created in 2004 and titled "Farben II und Z" are painted with acrylic on plastic film and set in aluminum frames.
The new edition "1000 Hasen", 2021 is also part of the exhibition and encounters the viewer several times in the gallery. The rabbit, originally a found object made of sheet iron, is part of Imi Knoebel's work complex "Eigentum Himmelreich", dedicated to his friend Imi Giese, from 1983. The edition "1000 Hasen", 2021 is made of sheet copper in water jet technique and hangs on a nail made of steel.

Imi Knoebel, born in 1940 in Dessau, studied at the Werkkunstschule Darmstadt before joining the class of Joseph Beuys at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1964, together with Imi Giese. He has participated at the documenta several times and his works are exhibited in museums worldwide: including 2018 at Haus Konstruktiv, Zurich, 2017 at Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden, Wuppertal, 2016 at Musée National Fernand Léger, Biot, France. In 2006, Imi Knoebel received an honorary doctorate from the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, Germany; in 2011, he was awarded the Kythera Prize, and in 2016, he was named Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

The Editions from the Collection Kunstraum am Limes, which opens in mid-May at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg, NL and comprises the complete collection of Sigmar Polke's editions from the Kunstraum am Limes - Sammlung Zeitgenössischer Kunst, Hillscheid. On the occasion of the exhibition, a catalog will be published in cooperation between Kunstraum am Limes - Sammlung Zeitgenössischer Kunst, Hillscheid, Galerie Christian Lethert, Cologne, De Pont Museum, Tilburg and Kunstforum Ostdeutsche Galerie, Regensburg.
From 09 September to 12 September 2021 we will again be represented at The Armory Show in New York. In early September we are delighted to present the first solo exhibitions of Roman Gysin and Sonia Leimer in the gallery.

IMI KNOEBEL 1000 Hasen

The rabbit, originally a found object made of sheet iron, is part of Imi Knoebel's work complex Eigentum Himmelreich, dedicated to his friend Imi Giese, from 1983.

The studio view of Eigentum Himmelreich from 1983 shows the rabbit hanging freely on the wall. In the same year, the work was presented for the first time at the Galerie Schoof in Frankfurt a.M. and in 1984 at Le Consortium in Dijon, where the rabbit could be discovered lying on a wall ledge. Further exhibitions followed at the Musée Municipal in La-Roche-sur-Yon, in 1985 and in 1992 at the Bonnefantenmuseum, Maastricht, which purchased Eigentum Himmelreich for the museum collection. In the large survey exhibition in 2014 at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, Eigentum Himmelreich was shown in the first floor cabinets overlooking the Japanese Garden. The rabbit was found here only at second glance, hidden behind the cabinet.

"Once [...] we wanted to replace the dove of peace with a new symbol of peace. So we will hereby make the rabbit a symbol of peace [...] I think it is a cheerful animal that speaks to the human soul and is known by every child." Quote Joseph Beuys after he melted down a replica of the crown of the Tsar Ivan the Terrible and cast a rabbit from it.

mit einem Schlag 1000. 1000 blanke in Kupfer***,
Einen von denen muß man schon haben, wenn man mitreden will - einer
ist keiner. Frage: Wie kommt man aus der 2. in die 3. Dimension? das
ist schon ein Kunststück. Antwort: Ein kleiner Knick links oben im
Ohr reicht. Das ist schon alles, um gesehen zu werden!

"Eigentum Himmelreich" ist im Arbeitsfeld des Imi Knoebel ein
Sonderbezirk, auf den er 1983, 9 Jahre nach dem Abgang seines
Kumpanen Imi Giese, gestoßen war. Dies genau in der Zeit, als sein
Atelier Heerstraße 16 an Zeug überquoll und dazu bestimmt war,
umgestülpt zu werden in die gleichnamige Arbeit "Heerstraße 16",
1984. über so manche Dinge der Kunst, oft die wichtigsten, sollte
man nicht zuviel reden, weil man sie damit zerstört. Vieles war gar
nicht erst zu sehen - ein Glück! so z.B. der Hase hinter dem Schrank
in besagtem "Eigentum Himmelreich". Und der "Schrank"? Ein Schrank
ohne Tür, zu, stattdeßen hinterwärts der Hase! Eine verzauberte
Zone. 1970 hatte Imi Knoebel auf 54 Schwarzweiß-Aufnahmen des
Sternenhimmels je 1 Stern hinzugefügt, der - 00+1 - nicht mehr zu
sehen war. Von Anfang an war die Abstimmung
sichtbar - unsichtbar Imis Kernthema, ebenso Himmel und Erde, Sterne
und Schränke (Buffets), wie Kinder es lieben. 1976 füllte er 6
schwarze Schränke mit 250.000 mit am lineal gezogenen Linien
versehenen DinA4-Blättern. Der Schlüßel der Schränke lag, bereit
für jede und jeden, an der Kaße, ungenutzt. Aber am schönsten sind
in diesem Zusammenhang die überraschungen, so wie jetzt jüngst 2021
- der 100. Geburtstag von Joseph Beuys und das 2. Jahr Corona - ,
die wie ein Wunder hinter dem Schrank hervorgetretene 1OOOfache
Hasenerscheinung aus Himmelreich, gereicht jeweils in einem flachen
Pappkarton jeweils mit 1 Nagel.

‘Imagine you are in a very, very remote place and post takes a couple of months to arrive. Or you are above the arctic circle! You send images to an esteemed colleague and await a response. The response comes months later. You are unable to ask questions of what you just read because it's a letter, no Internet, no phones. What then happens is that you slow right down, you listen to and digest every last drop of sense in that letter. You sniff it, you sleep with it under your pillow and you constantly re-read it until you suck every last ounce of anything useful from it. You then make work and any accompanying comments that are posted off with your next work upload will be very deeply thought about. That's it, period! Turps Correspondence Course is an innovative programme of online mentoring facilitated through critical, supportive written reviews delivered by a dedicated mentor. The course is aimed at painters who want to develop or reinvigorate their work, whether recently graduated from art school, mid career or those without any formal arts education.

The course is designed and structured to be delivered entirely online so that painters, based anywhere in the world and at any stage in their career, can participate and receive informed, critical feedback from a mentor who is practising painter selected by Turps. There are 5 review points throughout the year when you will be required to upload images of your work and a short statement or ‘letter’ to your mentor. Your mentor will then review what has been uploaded and write their response. It is a very different type of feedback from more conventional face-to-face tutorials but we believe this is what makes the correspondence course such an appealing and sought after professional development course.

Since 2012, it has offered over 600 artists a fresh perspective on their work within the context of current painting discourse. Once enrolled, many painters continue on the programme for 2 or more years, developing close connections with both the mentoring team and their peer network through participant-led initiatives and social media connections.

Turps Correspondence Course painters have gone on to feature in New Contemporaries, John Moores Painting Prize and the Marmite Prize for Painting, and it has also enabled painters to successfully apply for and be accepted onto MA and MFA programmes across the world. Applicants must have a personal email address, access to the Internet and reasonable facilities to document work digitally. For more information, see our FAQ.

Participants will be expected to upload works, drawings, works in progress, sketchbook pages etc. for the duration of the course. It is important this is an ongoing process that best describes their output as this will allow the mentors to track developments and compile their observations at dedicated feedback points.

‘I applied for the course to re-enter a creative and critical community, to begin a conversation that would assist me in articulating my practice and give me the confidence to discuss my work on my terms. I wanted to connect with a community of painters. My experience of the Turps Correspondence course so far is that it has felt inclusive and generous but full of rigour, intelligence and humour. It couldn’t be more different to my MA back in 1996 which felt like a long and unproductive battle to justify myself as a painter.... Coming onto the course I had no preconceptions. My first review was articulate, intelligent and startlingly accurate in its assessment of both what the work was attempting and where I might focus my attention. It was generous and unexpected, discussing my work at length and in terms that were entirely appropriate to the way that I had made it. I felt that I was being taken seriously, by someone who knew what they were talking about, who understood painting. It has given me a sense of momentum and the second review affirmed the choices that I have begun to make, whilst daring me to be braver and more direct. I hadn't realised how much I had missed the conversations that painting generates with other painters, I had been having those conversations with my own paintings for many years and needed to look up from what I was doing. It has been exactly what I needed. I nearly didn’t apply. I am now planning to continue onto a second year of the programme. ’

The BARON PRIZE is a biannual award, which recognises artists, photographers and filmmakers who have created projects investigating gender, sex, sexuality and identity politics. BARON Books was launched in 2011, stocked worldwide in 20 different countries, many of our books are in collections including the book collections at MoMA NYC and The LUMA Foundation.

The first and second edition of the BARON PRIZE was judged by a transnational panel including Ashleigh Kane (Dazed & Confused); Chiara Bardelli Nonino (Italian Vogue); Ché Zara Blomfield (Art Editor Baron & Curator); Petra Collins (Curator & Photographer) Sue Webster (Artist), Bruce LaBruce (Artist & Director) and Nadia Lee Cohen (Photographer).

Past winners have included Matthew Grubb, Frances Wilks and Ramona Wang.

The third edition of the BARON PRIZE will be judged by a panel including Julie Verhoeven (artist), Matthew Holroyd (Baron Founder), Sunil Gupta (photographer) and PZ Today (Creative Director).

The BARON PRIZE is open to artists, filmmakers, photographers working in any medium and from anywhere in the world, over the age of 18 are invited to apply for the 2021 edition of the BARON PRIZE. The winner will be announced in June 2021 and the winners prize is £1000 and a £1000 gift certificate to spend at Baron Books.

The Abbey Scholarship and Fellowships in Painting

Abbey Awards offer all expenses paid residencies at the British School at Rome for artists showing exceptional merit and promise.

The Abbey Scholarship offers one annual nine month residency for an early career artist at The British School at Rome, with a monthly stipend of £1,000.

Abbey Fellowships offer three annual three month residencies for mid-career artists at The British School at Rome, each with monthly stipends of £1,500.

When submitting your work, you will have the option to opt-in to be considered for possible Instagram features on our feed @hopperprize, where we currently reach an audience of over 50k. Our editors will be featuring select submissions on a rolling basis prior to the application deadline.

Eligibility

The Hopper Prize is open to all artists age 18 and older working in any media. There are no restrictions on genre, subject matter, or media. We welcome entries in all media.

We are committed to supporting artists from diverse cultural backgrounds at all stages of their professional careers. All artists are encouraged to apply.
