The FIELD KITCHEN ACADEMY is an interdisciplinary educational residency programme that gathers artists/ creative minds, a resident chef and prominent experts from different fields together around a kitchen table through mind-opening acts and actions.

On its second edition, a total of 11 interdisciplinary residents will be selected to join the upcoming FIELD KITCHEN ACADEMY in its three modules. Curated by Ece Pazarbaşı, this year, under the title of THE CURIOUS LOOP, we will use the notion of loops-in-sound as a gateway to other concepts of repetition, offering a variety of individual and collective experiences. Loops represent a time that is suspended, which is a compressed source of the past, present and the future. The loop also oscillates between the known and the unknown; as for the viewer and listener it could unfold to a future of known (as it repeats the same material over and over again), but also it may relate to an unknown (as surprises are always welcome), and one never knows if the loop will be broken with an unknown sound or visual component - no matter how well defined and repeated the loop has developed in the past. If one cannot step into the same river twice, and if one opens to perception with all senses, what differences can we find in each loop?

Composed of three intertwined modules that allow for different durations in the residency, the program is open to application from all disciplines and all walks of life. The selected residents will have the opportunity of pursuing processes of experimentation, discussion, trial and error, the progression of knowledge, and know-how in working sessions during the first 3 weeks. The last half week will be the ‘simmering’ period where the residents are expected to do NOTHING but only LISTENING.

The Hopper Prize

The Hopper Prize is offering 5 individual artist grants in the amount of 1,000 USD awarded through an open call art competition juried by leading contemporary curators.

The Hopper Prize was established in order to increase the recognition of artwork created by artists and photographers. Our aim is to advance artists' careers by providing them with unrestricted financial support that is coupled with a platform for increased visibility. We accept submissions twice a year via an open call.

We are currently accepting submissions for the Spring 2020 grant cycle.

Grant awards are unrestricted and may be used any way the recipients choose.

Additionally, when submitting, you will have the option to opt-in to be considered for possible Instagram features on our feed @hopperprize, where we currently reach an audience of over 39K. Our editors will be featuring select submissions on a rolling basis prior to the application deadline.

In addition to grant awards, our shortlist, and Instagram reach, we will be providing an additional platform for exposure via our online Journal Insights Into Contemporary Art. We launched this digital publication to give artists a new channel to amplify their voice while providing an in-depth look at their work, practice, and background. Grant recipients and shortlisted artists will all receive the opportunity to publish an interview to include any work of their choosing as a means of providing continued support beyond the open call.

Eligibility
The Hopper Prize is open to all artists age 18 and older working in any media. There are no restrictions on genre, subject matter, or media. We welcome entries in all media.

We are committed to supporting artists from diverse cultural backgrounds at all stages of their professional careers. All artists are encouraged to apply.

SUMMER SCHOOL IN CURATORIAL STUDIES

AT THE VENICE BIENNALE

The School for Curatorial Studies is an ambitious and challenging project promoted since 2004 and conceived as a school committed to experimentation and interdisciplinary thinking. The main goals are to spread the knowledge in the field of visual arts and to introduce the students to the professions related to the art world, focusing on contemporary curatorial theory and practice and contemporary museology. The School’s activities are meant for all those interested and passionate in art, graduated students or professionals who want to deepen their knowledge and improve their practical skills. The School’s teaching staff is formed by Italian and international professionals, scholars, historians and art critics of recognized experience. Among them: Matt Williams (curator), Filippo Lotti (Sotheby’s), Chiara Barbieri (Peggy Guggenheim Collection), Francesca Colasante (Pinault Collection), Andrea Goffo (Found. Prada), Nicola Lees (Serpentine London).

The program:

The Summer School in Curatorial Practice will take place during the International Biennale Venice. With an interdisciplinary approach, the course provides practical training and experience within museums and exhibition settings. Its international faculty includes curators and museum professionals, artists and critics. The course is designed to increase students understanding of the intellectual and technical tasks of the curator figure. English-taught lectures cover both theoretical and practical topics that go from the history of contemporary visual arts and practices of exhibition-making, to Exhibition Management. The students will participate in weekly activities, such as artist studio visits, tours of exhibition spaces, networking events and workshops. The program culminates with the set up of the exhibition.

The Summer School includes visits of specific art venues all over the city of Venice during the International Venice Biennale. A series of selected case studies will offer the students an opportunity to observe the development of contemporary art. The School’s goal is to align these specific theoretical lectures with a practical approach. Besides the theoretical lectures, a series of laboratories and workshops aims to introduce the students to the work of critical text writing, press releases and to structure all the different aspects of publishing. The students will be offered the possibility of a gallery training and of setting up together - with one of our tutors, their exhibition in Venice, as a final project of the course.

Bruxelles is an art city and is offering many opportunities: private galleries, collections. We will visit artist studios and public galleries and Museums of contemporary art.

The second module:

August 17th – 21th, 2020

The second module is dedicated to individual researching and finalizing the exhibition project. During this period of time the students will have to face practical duties, such as coordinating the artists, managing transportation and insurance policies, promoting and curating the promotional material.

The third module:

August 24th - September 1st, 2020

The last part of the course lies in the production of the event. During this period of time all the work concerning the final event will take place. The students will coordinate the arrival and the display of the works of art and supervise all the different aspects related to the event, such as promotion, organization, last details about the publication, opening. After the presentation to the public, the student will be given the tools to professionally document the event.

Duration and structure

The course has a duration of 450 hours. The participants will develop themes as well as concepts, organization, acquisition, communication and the concrete implementation of their skills together with the course director and international guests (artists, curators, architects, critics, fine arts scientists and publishers of art journals).

CALL FOR ART / SUMMER MARATHON 2020

ABOUT

Formerly the Contemporary Visions annual group exhibition, the annual open call (now in its 10th year) has merged to encompass the highly successful SUMMER MARATHON*, which debuted at the gallery in 2019 to outstanding reception. The inaugural summer marathon presented a revitalised approach to the traditional ‘group show’ format, presenting international artists in back-to-back solo exhibitions (in lieu of one group show) during the summer period. Through this unconventional approach, each of the exhibiting artists was able to fulfil their vision and stage a complete solo exhibition for a one-week period. Many works were sold to both private and public collections, Florence Hutchings had a sell-out exhibition and Jan Sebastian Koch whose first-ever solo show was a near sell-out.

The BEERS London Annual Open intends to explore current themes, trends, and innovations in contemporary art across all artistic disciplines. Artists anywhere in the world are invited to submit an application for consideration, and applicants will be vetted by a jury of artistic professionals, and selected artists will exhibit in a one-week solo exhibition at Beers London gallery in the heart of East London’s vibrant art community during the 2020 SUMMER MARATHON. That’s right: at least 6 artists will be selected to present week-long solo exhibitions over the summer of 2020.

In the past, applicants and exhibitors have gone on to solo-exhibitions or inclusions in art-fairs with BEERS London; inclusion in gallery Director Kurt Beers’ various publications like 100 Painters of Tomorrow / 100 Sculptors of Tomorrow; placement in public or private collections; representation by Beers London or other galleries; and countless opportunities with other galleries. Last year alone, Milo Matthieu and Marion Fink were discovered through the open call and are now represented by Beers London.

ELIGIBILITY

Artists working anywhere in the world, at any stage of their career are invited to apply.

8 July to 23 August 2020 and the Summer Marathon will include an opening preview on Wednesday 8 July and a closing preview on Wednesday 19 August 2020. For each of the other weeks we will have a casual reception each Saturday from 2-4pm with the exception of the first exhibition and the last.

IMAGE SUBMISSION

· All media is accepted. Including painting, photography, sculpture, video (see below), and all two-dimensional and three-dimensional work, new-media and any non-traditional media. We recommend that you do not apply with work that is dated prior to 2018.

· Submit up to 4 JPEGS of different works. Please label as: title_media_sizeincm_year.jpg

· Filenames must be no longer than 140 characters

· Maximum file size is 3MB per image

VIDEO SUBMISSIONS

Artists working in video or time-based media can submit up to 4 video links, accompanied by video stills.

· Upload videos to a password-free hosting site such as Vimeo or Youtube. Due to the amount of submissions, videos protected by passwords cannot be viewed.

· Videos should be no longer than 1 minute in length. Artists of interest may be contacted to submit videos of a longer runtime.

ARTWORK RESTRICTIONS

There are no restrictions to the dimension of exhibited works apart from a gallery ceiling height of 2.75m.

Work should be available for sale during the exhibition dates.

DEADLINE

The deadline is on Monday 4 November, 2019 until midnight (GMT+1)

FEE

There is a processing fee of £10 to submit – payable directly from the site by credit/debit card or Paypal.

RESULTS

Results will be posted online and sent to the emails provided by each applicant. However, in many instances pertinent information is overlooked or redirected to applicants’ spam filters, so we recommend checking the BEERS site for updates. We kindly ask that you refrain from emailing the gallery as updates will be posted to our website as decisions progress.

HOW TO APPLY

Submit all information directly to the online application system, using a laptop or desktop computer (the system does not currently work on mobile).
