NEW ARTISTS, NEW AUDIENCES
JON SNOW SELECTS FOR ING DISCERNING EYE EXHIBITION 2008
This year Jon Snow the face of Channel 4 News is selecting for the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition, Jon is an art collector and a strong supporter of the arts.
Each year the ING Discerning Eye Exhibition contains an imaginative and broad selection of both contemporary and traditional artists, setting established names alongside new talent and connecting new artists with new audiences. This exhibition is of small, affordable art and by renewing its six selectors every year, the work selected stays fresh and new names are brought in to the arena.
The 2008 selectors are: collectors, Bob Benton and Jon Snow; artists, Fred Cuming D.Litt RA and Anita Klein; and critics, Robin Morgan and Frances Carey. Some of the invited artists for this year’s exhibition are Nigel Swift, Paula Rego and Anne Lynch.
The ING Discerning Eye is an art buyer’s dream. The 20-inch size limit ensures all art remains in the domestic, highly affordable scale.
“My choices were made in an instant. A painting had to grab me. I chose paintings that I would want at home which probably means this could end up costing me a small fortune as I shall want them all for myself”. Davina McCall talking about her experience as a judge in 2007.
Further to selecting from open submissions, the selectors also invite artists they know to take part.
“One way of deciding on artists to select for my hang would have been to stay only with those whom I would like to collect, or who have acquired. But that excluded too many possible choices. So I’ve combined those who light my personal fire and those whose work I admire in a more detached way and would like to draw attention to.” Drusilla Beyfus talking about her experience as a judge in 2007.
The charm of The ING Discerning Eye exhibition lies in the unpredictability and variety of the selectors' choice of works, providing the opportunity for unknown and extremely well established artists working in different mediums and styles to show alongside each other.
The ING Discerning Eye Exhibition runs from 13–23 November 2008 at the Mall Galleries, The Mall, London SW1Y 5BD, 10am – 5pm daily. Admission free. Nearest tube: Charing Cross. Gallery reception: 0207 968 0962
