Diogene Residency, Turin, Italy
Deadline : 23 May 2009
Diogene_urbanbivouac is a uniquely structured residency programme set up by the Turin-based artist group ‘Diogene’. Directed at artists from all over the world, the programme aims to encourage and develop a new depth of artistic practice, intensifying the role of the artist within society by developing a dialogue among the artists themselves and focusing attention on the poetics of their work.
This fresh approach to the international residency programme system has been set up with one precise objective in mind: to live and work in the city whilst taking full advantage of all its “in-between” spaces.
An international competition was set up, open to artists from all over the world, without any restrictions on medium or concept. The artist members of the Diogene Association then selected an artist who will spend the month of October living and working inside a small self-contained module – il Bivacco (Bivouac)- especially created and built on an in-between space in the city.
2nd edition (2009)
The Diogene group of artists is promoting the international competition “Diogene Urbanbivouac”, open to Italian and foreign artists. The residency proposes a brand new approach to art. The residency also intends to stimulate dialogue among artists, with the focus on in-depth comprehension of the poetic artistic work.
A project by artists for artists
The “Diogene Urbanbivouac” Residence project is the result of a joint effort by a group of artists. They share their ideas concerning the relationship between art and society, the role of the artist, and art as a form of knowledge. They also make themselves available to other artists, thus activating a shared collaboration with them.
Art. 1 - Requirements
The competition is open to all artists currently working in the specific sector of visual arts, without restrictions of approach or medium.
Art. 2 - Place of Residence
The “Diogene Urbanbivouac” program is characterized by the peculiar site of the residence. The artist selected will in fact be hosted in a small housing unit or Bivouac , built in an “interstitial” area of the city, that will be the artist’s living and working environment. The arrangement allows the artist to experience a new and powerful interaction between the urban environment and its community.
The Bivouac, designed by Diogene’s members, is assembled from left over materials and is equipped with a survival kit made up of a solar panel, heating and cooking kit, and portable toilet. This should not be seen as an experiment in extreme survival, but rather as the desire to relate to the city, our “natural” habitat, in search of the essential. The urban bivouac is similar to Diogene’s ”barrel”, a space strictly directed to meditation, with the aim of adding value to the artist’s work.
Art. 3 - Site, Lenght and Period of Stay
The residence will be hosted by the city of Torino between September 21 and November 7 2009, for a period of 3 to 6 weeks according to the needs of the selected artist.
Art. 4 - Events
During the residence period the Diogene group will organize meetings with critics, researchers and others involved in contemporary art, giving the artist in reidence the chance to present his or her works as well as the project(s) developed in Turin.
There will be one or more days in which the artist opens the studio to the general public who can meet and talk with him.
