RICEFIELD VISUAL ARTS RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY, Glasgow
Deadline for applications: Monday 29th June 2009
Three-Month Residency: September 1st – November 27th 2009
Ricefield aims to:
• Contribute to the diversity of Scotland’s arts by promoting Chinese arts and culture to as wide an audience as possible, encouraging multiracial understanding and breaking down the barriers of perception.
• Act as a platform for visual artists, craftspeople, curators, musicians, performing artists and writers of Chinese descent on which to practice, develop, promote and exhibit their work.
• Challenge, inform and add to contemporary Scottish arts by introducing works created in a different culture, of a different aesthetic.
• Engage with the Chinese communities in Scotland, encouraging participation in the arts through providing the opportunity to celebrate and explore their cultural identity.
Ricefield is committed to equal opportunities. We recognise that artists of Chinese descent are underrepresented in the UK. We are committed to addressing this by creating and nurturing opportunities for visual artists of Chinese descent to practice and promote their work. The residency scheme is covered by Sections 35, 37 and 38 of the Race Relations Act (1976) as amended.
Visual Arts Residency
This three-month residency creates an exciting new opportunity for an artist to focus on the development and experimentation of their own practice & ideas, and to create new work.
After the residency there will be a final exhibition in Ricefield where new work created during the period will be shown.
The artist will have sole responsibility for all artistic elements of the residency and final exhibition.
During the three months, the artist will be required to take part in a minimum of 8 hours’ outreach work to make their work more available to the public. Arrangements for the nature of this outreach will be tailored to the artist’s own practice and needs, and assistance from Ricefield staff and volunteers can be guaranteed.
Facilities, resources and professional development opportunities offered with the residency will include:
• Sole use of Ricefield’s gallery as workspace between 1st September and 27th November 2009. The artist will have the opportunity to make use of Ricefield’s window to exhibit work in progress
throughout the residency.
• Mentoring
• Networking and contact opportunities with key individuals, arts & cultural organisations and Chinese communities in the UK and with Ricefield’s contacts abroad.
• Curatorial support for the final exhibition and promotion and organisation of private view.
• Opportunity to have input into arts development at Ricefield
• Access to the Glasgow School of Art library
• Membership to SPIN: Glasgow
