Call for proposals - Artist in Residence, Nexus Art Cafe
Nexus is a creative platform for new and emerging artistic talent of all practices to come to and join a community rich in new ideas, dialogue and personal development.
At Nexus we believe that quality artwork and community engagement and participation do not preclude one another. We don't want our exhibitors to feel isolated, like they're putting their work up into a vacuum where it may or may not be appreciated. We feel that by directly engaging with the community of customers, staff and volunteers here through creative practice, events, talks and a good old fashioned party, artists and public alike can benefit and learn a lot more from the artwork than they would if experiencing it in isolation from one another.
The benefits we offer to the public are a more accessible, inclusive and playful approach to creativity, encouraging non-artists to enjoy and benefit from creativity in their everyday lives.
As part of our commitment to the development of these ideals, we are establishing an artist in residency programme. We want to use the residency as one way of exploring an ongoing art/community dialogue. Rather than our artists being shut away engaged in some hidden, mystical creative process, we want them to integrate themselves into Nexus life as much as possible/practicable. The studio space is provided free of charge on the understanding that artists actively contribute towards our shared vision for the café and it's role as a community arts space.
Residencies will be for one month initially, extending to a maximum of three months reviewable on a month by month basis.
The studio will be available from 10am to 6.45 pm each day and residents will have their own key (Nexus staff will also keep a key and residents should be aware that staff will access the space if necessary).
We encourage residents to view the space as their own, and residents may furnish/decorate the room as they wish, providing all such alterations to the space are temporary and fully removable. You are responsible for leaving the space as found (or better!).
We ask that respect be shown to Central Hall and Nexus staff and customers and that residents keep in mind that we are a busy café frequented by a diverse range of people and that activities undertaken as part of the residency do not interfere with the business side of the café, and do not cause unnecessary offence to the public.
We strongly encourage an 'open door' policy and ask that residents are welcoming and open to dialogue with other community members and users of the space (please see and fill out attached form where there is space for residents to outline their proposals for any community workshops, projects, engagement/outreach work. This document will form part of the residency 'contract' that will be reviewed after the first month.
