Program Coordinator – The West Wing

In 2010 West Space will present the West Wing, an off-site project space within Melbourne Central, a large retail multiplex within Melbourne’s CBD. In keeping with West Space’s artistic vision, West Space will present an artistic program that is experimental, cross artform and critically engaged.
We are seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to manage the logistics of the artistic program.
Program Coordinator – The West Wing
EFT: 0.2 (i.e. one day per week, or hours to be determined in consultation with Director)
Period of contract: April 2010 – December 2010 or until licence with Melbourne Central ceases.
Salary: $140 per day plus superannuation (equivalent to $36,000 pro rata).
Reports to: Director
POSITION PURPOSE
This position contributes to the mission and goals of West Space by undertaking the administrative, production and coordinating duties and responsibilities associated with the delivery of the West Wing artistic program.
ORGANISATION
In 2010 West Space will present an off-site project space within Melbourne Central, a large retail multiplex within Melbourne’s CBD. This is a joint initiative between Melbourne Central and West Space, and we are excited about the different possibilities that might arise through presenting an artistic program in this unique location. The space is being offered free to artists.
West Space will present an experimental and diverse artistic program at the Melbourne Central site, offering unique possibilities for artists and offering visitors to Melbourne Central an experience different to the retail experience they expect.
In keeping with West Space’s artistic vision, preference will be given to contemporary art projects that are experimental, exploratory, cross artform and critically engaged. We seek to represent diverse and experimental artforms, artists and approaches to art.
DUTIES
1. In conjunction with the Director, West Space Program Coordinator and the Program Committee, select projects to be part of the West Wing artistic program.
2. Be the primary point of contact for the exhibiting artists.
3. Manage the production of the West Wing artistic program, including managing install/deinstall, opening celebrations and other logistics essential to the program.
4. Liaise with other external parties (including printers, designers, freight companies etc) as required to deliver the program, promotional materials, and advertising.
5. Provide a professional interface and respond quickly to prospective artists and performers enquiring about opportunities at West Wing.
6. Liaise with Melbourne Central staff as required.
7. Maintain upkeep of gallery, exhibitions and gallery services areas.
8. Manage gallery minding and additional program support by artists, volunteers and committee members.
9. Promote the West Wing activities through media releases and mail/email lists.
10. Oversee a digital image archive of artists’ work exhibited at the West Wing.
11. Communicate regularly and provide regular updates to the Director and the Program Coordinator.
SELECTION CRITERIA
• High level project management skills.
• High level written and verbal communication skills.
• High level computer skills.
• Strong interest in contemporary arts culture with a focus on critically engaged and experimental interdisciplinary arts practices.
• An effective and self-motivated team member with ability to work autonomously.
• Undergraduate arts degree, or equivalent experience, with knowledge of gallery-related procedures and technical office skills.
• A minimum of two years relevant work experience.
