Jerwood Encounters: 3-Phase is a new commissioning project that aims to set up a space of encounter between the developing bodies of work and thinking of two artists and three visual arts organisations.
Opportunity
This is an exhibition and development opportunity for two early career artists to make and
exhibit new work, with curatorial and practical support from Eastside Projects (Birmingham), g39 (Cardiff) and Jerwood Visual Arts (London). Each artist will develop solo shows for the second gallery at Eastside Projects and Unit #1 g39 and present work in a two person exhibition at Jerwood Visual Arts, London.
One artist will be recruited through Eastside Projects’ Extra Special People associates scheme,
and one artist will be recruited through g39’s WARP programme. You must be part of one of these networks to apply.
Who is it for?
Artists applying must be part of the Extra Special People or WARP networks. You can make work in any media.
You must be living and working outside London.
Selected artists will be in the process of establishing their careers, but will not yet have
had significant opportunities to show work outside their home region. We are looking for
those who will benefit the most from the exhibition opportunities, developmental support
and dialogue on offer.
What is on offer?
Each artist will receive:
A solo exhibition at Eastside Projects in January or March 2015.
An exhibition at Jerwood Visual Arts (showing alongside the other selected artist) in May 2015.
A solo exhibition at g39 in September or October 2015.
A fee of £1,700 and up to £3,200 for exhibition production and £250 for travel costs. Mentoring and practical support from Eastside Projects, Jerwood Visual Arts and g39. A publication will be produced for the project and, in discussion with the artist, a writer will be engaged to write on or around each artist’s work. The Jerwood Visual Arts’ writer in residence will also write about the exhibition for the Jerwood Visual Arts blog. An events programme will run alongside the exhibitions.

Ambition, compelling ideas and a commitment to developing an outstanding art practice.
You are invited to propose how, through this opportunity, you might achieve what has previously been just out of reach; how the project will enable you to crystallise your current research, focus your practice and develop your work and career. Proposals should identify what would make the difference for you at this point and how the opportunity will enable a breakthrough in your practice.
The exhibitions should be seen as an opportunity to test out ideas and bring into reality the next stage of your development, with the support of Eastside Projects, g39 and Jerwood Visual Arts throughout.
Selection Process
Artists should apply directly to Eastside Projects or g39, depending on the network you are a part of. All proposals will then be reviewed by a panel, which will include representatives from Eastside Projects, g39 and Jerwood Visual Arts. Following this, shortlisted artists will be invited to an interview. From these interviews one artist/collaborative practice from each network will be selected.

Applications should include:
1. Your name, contact details (email, address, telephone number and website address).
2. A 500 word proposal.
3. Evidence of your current and recent practice in the form of one of the following:
A selection of up to ten images
OR A direct link to a showreel of film and video work (maximum duration 5 minutes) uploaded to Youtube or Vimeo and (if necessary) password protected with the password: 3PHASE
OR Audio work (maximum duration 5 minutes) uploaded to Soundcloud.
4. Description of work submitted and 200 words explaining why you chose to send this material.
5. An up to date CV

Eastside Projects makes art public

g39 is an artist-run gallery in the centre of Cardiff, Wales’ capital city. The organisation recently relocated from a narrow three storey building where it originated, to an expansive warehouse. The gallery curates between six and eight exhibitions per year and often hosts events in the interim weeks and in addition works in offsite locations for individual projects. The organisation runs Wales Artist Resource Programme – WARP - an open-access resource and training space for artists. g39 focuses on contemporary work and consciously programmes a mix of work from Wales with work from further afield, placing work by established names alongside work by emerging or lesser known artists. The focus is on experimentation and risk and g39 aims to provide the opportunities to showcase new work rather than relying on selling.

Jerwood Visual Arts is a contemporary gallery programme based at Jerwood Space, London and on tour across the UK. It is run and funded by Jerwood Charitable Foundation, often in partnership with organisations including Eastside Projects, g39, Film and Video Umbrella, Photoworks and Forestry Commission England.
Through Jerwood Visual Arts we aim to provide an independent space focused first and foremost on artist development. We work with early career artists to commission and present new work and to take artistic risks, often trying something new for the first time. Central to the programme is the provision of meaningful budgets for commissioning and production, an excellent gallery team offering practical and curatorial support, and well-resourced press and marketing activity around each artist’s work. All of the projects we undertake begin with these principles and are then designed in response to current context and to what artists need and want.
