About the Department
The Department of Art Education, one of 23 departments at the school, is chaired by a full-time faculty member. Five full-time faculty and 10 part-time faculty offer 25 courses each year to undergraduate and graduate students through three degree programs. Two programs are certified by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE): the Bachelor of Fine Arts with an Emphasis in Art Education (BFAAE) and the 48-credit Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). The 36-hour Master of Arts in Art Education (MAAE) is focused on teaching within museums, communities, and alternative or informal settings and has no certification requirements.
SAIC's art education programs prepare students to become exemplary teachers, cultural workers, and practitioners of responsible and innovative art and design education who are committed to shaping socially responsive institutions and vibrant communities. Department faculty cultivate and maintain professional affiliations and successful community programmatic initiatives within the Chicago area; provide innovative leadership in the context of a leading urban art school; model innovative pedagogical practice; and work across the curriculum, demonstrating deep understanding of interdisciplinary practice.
