at Green Olive Arts international artist residency program
Deadline for Convergence: September 14, 2018
(alternatively, applications for our Winter, Summer and Fall seasons are accepted on an ongoing basis… see season dates below).
Application Fee: 200 MAD (approx. $20) non-refundable application fee is due at the time of application paid via credit card.
Green Olive Arts is an international art studio in Tetouan, Morocco, specializing in connecting the creatives of the world with the artists and the rich culture and beauty of Morocco, through artist residencies in an ancient city on the edge of the Mediterranean.
We provide 2-6 week artist-funded, resourced, self-directed residencies throughout the year, with applications accepted on an ongoing basis (details below), with the exception of our special month long, Convergence residency in the spring:
UPROOTED: Convergence 2019 residency (March 21 - April 17, 2019) is an open call to global creatives to dig deep and explore through their art the common story of migration and displacement in the human narrative. Artists of all nationalities and disciplines are invited to apply through our website, with a unique proposal for their work based on the UPROOTED theme.
Artists in residence will live in common housing with private rooms, enjoy 2 meals per day together, share work spaces and engage in dialogue over these 4 weeks with each other and other local artists in Tetouan. They will be immersed in experiences aimed at informing their creative practice and offering insight into the current and historical narratives of migration in Tetouan and around the globe. Participants will also have exclusive access to the resources of Green Olive Arts’ 10-room art studio facilities, library, and artist staff for support and execution of their creative proposal throughout the month.
COST
The total cost of the Convergence residency is 44,000 MAD (approx. $4700 USD) - which includes 27 days of studio, services, housing, 2 meals per day, program, and all in country travel. Participants are responsible for their own airfare to/from Tangier (TNG) or Tetouan (TTU), Morocco. See below for the reduced cost of our self-directed residencies during other seasons.
ELIGIBILITY
Green Olive Arts holds a broad definition of “artist” to include many types of creative production – this particular residency may appeal to those who work in painting, drawing, mixed media, writing, textile arts, sculpture, design, photography, video, installation art, and many other forms.
To be eligible for consideration, applicants must submit the online application form, CV, portfolio of recent works, proposal, artist statement, application fee and complete an interview. Applications are due September 14, 2018.
LOCATION
Tetouan, Morocco is the ideal art-making location. Tetouan is a jewel of a city, situated in the North of Morocco, on the North-Western tip of Africa. It is nestled up against the Mediterranean Sea in a beautiful valley where two mountain ranges meet. Many say that Tetouan is one of the most beautiful cities in Morocco. Its medina, the ancient walled quarter of the city, is just a 5 minute walk from our studio and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a rich history and culture. Tetouan also touts Morocco’s most prestigious National Institute of Fine Art and has art “in its blood” on a grassroots level in a way that is rarely seen in this part of the world since it has been the starting place for the majority of Morocco’s artists.
2019 WINTER, SUMMER & FALL seasons
We are currently taking applications on an ongoing basis for 2-6 week resourced, self-directed residencies during the following residency seasons:
WINTER – January 14 -February 23, 2019
SUMMER – June 17 – July 21, 2019
FALL – September 23 – October 27, 2019
Residencies during our open seasons are self-directed and artists of both emerging and established artistic talent are invited to apply, with a proposal reflecting their own goals and theme of work. These are non-programmed residencies, so the residency fee is significantly lower. Shared studios are 2500-2250 MAD per week ($260-230 USD), depending on the duration of residency. Private studio space is also available during these seasons, for 3700-3375 MAD.
Residencies during these seasons include sunny studio space, fully equipped facilities, shared kitchen, internet, shared computer with printer/scanner, connections with local craftsmen and materials suppliers, web-based promotion, arranged meet-ups with local artists and/or gatekeepers, in-studio consulting and assistance with creative process and production needs by one of our founding artists, and culminating program open studios or exhibition. Housing, tours, travel and meals are not included, but can be arranged by Green Olive Arts at discounted prices.
As with the Convergence residency, artists from a broad range of disciplines may apply, and to be eligible for consideration, applicants must submit the online application form, CV, portfolio of recent works, proposal, artist statement, application fee and complete an interview.
