We're delighted to announce that DIY Cultures returns to London for its 5th year on 14th May 2017!

DIY Cultures 2017 is a day-long festival of zines, artist books, comics, talks, films, exhibitions and workshops.

The zine fair at DIY Cultures is spread across four venues in Rich Mix (London, UK) and hosts over 90 exhibitors ranging from artists, illustrators, comic book makers, activists and small-press publishers.

Table space is £11 for half a 6ft trestle table.

There will be a FREE communal table for people with one-off zines to sell. No need to apply for table space, just bring your zines to the DIY desk on the day! We also welcome applications from people based outside of London and internationally.

FILM & ANIMATION

We’re looking for films and animation to screen at DIY Cultures. Themes we’re interested in this year are post-truth knowledge, Trump, Brexit, justice, activism, mental health, shyness, introverts, unemployment, and technology art but other themes may also be submitted. PUNCH Projects presents: Barnstorm at Bluestone Garage

PUNCH Projects presents: Barnstorm at Bluestone Garage

Building on a 10-year history of exhibitions and projects across the Northwest, PUNCH Projects presents Barnstorm - a series of pop-up exhibits activating rural spaces in unexpected ways with art, music and creative installations. The first in the series, “Barnstorm at Bluestone Garage,” will be a two-day art happening that transforms the Model KE building in Ellensburg’s SODO district into an exhibition highlighting new media works and digital prints gathered from an international call to artists.

Submission guidelines: The exhibition will be comprised of large-format printed images, video monitors and projections juried by the PUNCH Projects BOD. Instead of original pieces of art, selected artists will be given instructions to provide a high-resolution digital image file or video file of the chosen work(s); large format prints of the selected images will be created from the files and hung in the space. Video works will be displayed via monitors and projections directly onto the interior and exterior walls of the building. PUNCH will direct any sales inquiries to the artist. PUNCH Projects will pay the cost of shipping prints to the artists after the exhibition closes.

There is no theme to the call; however, we encourage submissions that consider how a work might speak to the dialogue between urban and rural sensibilities, as well as images and videos that might operate in a non-traditional exhibition space of this sort.

As “Barnstorm at Bluestone Garage” will kick off the first in a series of rural art exhibitions, all submissions will be considered for subsequent PUNCH Projects events.

Organized in conjunction with the acclaimed Porn FilmFestival Berlin, now in its 11th year, SomoS Art House is calling for submissions for an open call for performative projects and ephemeral installations as critical responses to the notions of fantasy, consumption of images, and the spectatorship and voyeurism of sexuality in mediated society.

Some questions to consider:
How do we imagine our own paradise? Can we create it according to our private fantasy, according to our own intimate needs? Or can we enter one, that is offered to us, one that already exists? Can we negotiate or adapt our own paradise? Can it be a public paradise, a democratic one, open for all? Do we want to share it, let others in?

This topic is partially inspired as a response to the recent resurgence in the popularity of virtual reality. What is it that compels people to leave reality behind and enter a virtual reality? What would they like to find in this reality, or what is it that is missing in our shared reality? Why do people want to isolate themselves in their own private reality?

We are not so much interested in the technical or technological aspect of virtual reality, but rather an exploration of the deeper inclination for people to shape and define their own distinctive versions of reality or to create ways, places, or times in which they can escape from reality. Sensorial experiences, interactivity vs performative isolation, and modified realities through immersion or dissociation, are all topics that come to mind when we discuss our instinct to create our own personal or custom paradises.

Contributions should include detailed plans for ephemeral and ethereal works such as performance, participatory elements, with ambient characteristics such as temporary installations and other time-based works.

Selected artists/performers will be invited to participate in an exhibition at SomoS Art House in Berlin that will take place from October 25th to October 30th, 2016, in conjunction with the 11th Porn FilmFestival Berlin.

Artists/Performers must be available in Berlin during this period.
Artists/Performers will be expected to engage audiences with a short version of their project on the opening evening on the 25th of October and prepare a longer duration piece to take place during opening hours of 2-7pm on one of the five subsequent exhibition days (26–30 October).

This is the theme of the “Venice Vending Machine Edition III, 2015”, that once again proposes to unite artists from all over the world, and project our hopes and thoughts for the future of our world.  A unique live art piece that combines an installation of 100+ INTERNATIONAL Artists running from 22 September to 4 October 2015 at the world famous Serra Dei Giardini, adjacent to the entry to the Gardens of the Biennale.

Work/s in any media, whether painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video in the form of memory stick and less than 3 minutes long, music if presented along with a visual form, and writers, poets, presenting as well in a visual context element.  Artwork can be either original or a limited copy of a work.  Work must have been produced within the past three years.

The work, in any media, maximum dimension 9cm diagonally will be packaged with the artist’ name and contact details in one of the plastic spheres. These will be placed in the vending machine and will be available through random selection by engaging with & conversing with the curator of the machine.

After delivery of work/s by 23:59:59 September 15, 2015 by all participating artists, ART-E-MOTION will then curate and produce an online catalogue, transport art work to Venice, Italy & install the work at the Serra Dei Giardini, market & promote the artist.

Digital Fabrication Residency is a professional development program engaging artists with digital tools for project visualization and fabrication workflows for 3D printing, CNC routing, laser cutting, digital embroidery, textile printing, animation and other platforms. A core concept of this program is to engage in the digital craft of making as it concerns technology augmenting with traditional fabrication concepts, processes and materials.  Residents learn software workflows and become knowledgeable in current applications of technology in the production of art.

Our program consists of an online program that includes group workshops, individual project development, guest speakers and invaluable resource information for understanding digital fabrication workflows. We also offer an Online/Onsite residency that is specifically catered to individual project goals that develop initially through online project development finalizing with onsite learning with machines and fabrication with the artist. Both programs provide artists with limited licenses to selected software and optional 3D print, laser cut, textile print or digital embroidery resources.  Also as part of our programing, Digital Fabrication Residency hosts online guest speaker presentations during the residency session that are open to residents and the public.

Digital Fabrication Residency seeks to empower artists with working knowledge of digital tools as they concern contemporary art studio practices. From concept to execution, we offer a range of informative programs and services to educate and facilitate artists.  We welcome applicants of beginner to advanced levels. Delfina Foundation (DF) is inviting visual artists, curators, performance artists and other cultural practitioners to apply for our thematic programme The Public Domain in autumn 2015.

Over the last 25 years, the World Wide Web has expanded our concept of the public sphere from the physical to the virtual.  For the second chapter of our recurring programme The Public Domain, Delfina Foundation is interested in exploring the collapse between these two realms through the use of technology.  We are also interested in current debates on security versus surveillance, privacy versus privatization, and autonomy versus anarchy.

To frame our second programme of The Public Domain, we are initially proposing three sub-themes: Grey Areas, Game Theories and Covert Ops.

Within Grey Areas we wish to explore the legalities of public space and ‘fair use’ of digital or public property, from open source data to rights-of-access over private land.  We will particularly focus on the concept of loopholes that become a creative way to circumvent set rules and produce alternative possibilities.

Game Theories will playfully consider the decisions we make in The Public Domain where civic and digital spaces are filters of public and private information, from Facebook ‘likes’ to public art campaigns.  With an eye on economic theories such as the ‘tradegy of the commons’ and the ‘price of anarchy’, we are curious about how public opinion and identity are affected when our behaviour and tastes are tracked and predicted.

Covert Ops will expand on the previous sub-themes to consider ways in which the public domain is controlled and/or contravened, from flash mobs to kettling, from drone surveillance to deep packet inspections, and from social networks to the darknet and other forms of architecture used to mask, encrypt, perform or reinforce identity.

The Public Domain is one of several on-going themes that underpin DF’s residency and public programmes. For information on the first chapter of The Public Domain :

In January 2015, DF launches Performance as Process as a new thread of our work. We particularly welcome applications from artists with a performative practice to build on these connections.

Subject to fundraising, the selected international resident(s) will receive: A residency at DF in London from 1 October to 18 December 2015, including accommodation, one economy return flight, a bursary for per diems, materials and a local travel allowance.
