A few days left to apply to The Photography Master Retreat.
Deadline March 3, 2019.
Dear photographer/visual artist,
Do you want to reflect on your work and practice in a non-competitive and enriching environment with three internationally acclaimed mentors in the south of France?
The Photography Master Retreat is an annual immersive workshop where emerging and established photographers from all over the world gather to rethink their work, refocus their trajectory and recharge their artistic batteries.
It is a unique residency during which you will intensely reflect on your photography projects in a communal and constructive spirit. The retreat is held in the remote medieval hamlet of Esparon in the south of France, the week after the opening of the international photography festival Les Rencontres d’Arles.
The 14 selected applicants will be under the guidance of three mentors:
- Elisabeth Biondi, Independent Curator, Teacher, Writer, and Visuals Editor 1996-2011 at The New Yorker, NY
- Lyle Rexer, Critic, Curator, and Faculty at School of Visual Arts, NY
- Martine Fougeron, Photographer, Artist, Faculty at ICP, NY
The Photography Master Retreat, in its 5th edition, will be held in the week of July 6-13, 2019 for a select group of select 14 photographers, chosen by the mentors.

“This is the only retreat where people actually have to reflect. Where the main activity is to look at the work they are making and have made, and think about what it actually means. What’s good about it, and what’s most important, what’s them about it?" Lyle Rexer, TPMR mentor.
“It felt like time stood still here in Esparon. I could explore the depths of my work in ways that I have not experienced before. I expanded my photographic community with wonderful mentors and photographers. Doing this workshop is a reminder that we are not alone as photographers and that our work can only improve and grow if we open it up for others to see and respond to.” Peggy, alumni 2017
