CAMP is the first of a new breed of arts residency. We run five-day residential arts, music, writing, philosophy, environmental and arts-activist sessions. These are no ordinary courses - they are intense, artistic catalysts run by internationally acclaimed practitioners; creative flashpoints designed to change the lives of everyone involved. Our current program includes opportunities to study with Turner Prize winner Laure Prouvost, celebrated composer Gavin Bryars, Cabaret Voltaire founder and world-famous sound recordist Chris Watson, electronic producer of the moment Laurel Halo, KLF/K-Foundation co-founder Bill Drummond, NYC avant-garde composer/sound artist Eli Keszler, art-activists Adbusters, the Center for Political Beauty, and many others.

It's a place where great art is made, new movements are formed, new ideas are explored and groundbreaking people are nurtured. It's about generating revolutions, incubating creative minds and bringing the best emerging practitioners in all artistic fields to their full potential.
The focus of CAMP is to use what we have – our artistic network, our facilities, our various record labels and publishing operations, our relationships with acclaimed artists and our artist support platforms – to provide people with a catalytic, game-changing masterclass experience, in inspiring surroundings.

Local information: CAMP is located in Aulus les Bains, the last village before the France/Spain Pyrenean frontier chain. The location is spectacular - we are nestled at 750m above sea level, surrounded by snowcapped peaks over 3000m high, ancient forests and cascading waterfalls. There are eagles, lammergeiers, vultures, ibex and bears.
Walk out of the residency, and within ten minutes you are completely alone in one of the most beautiful mountain landscapes in Europe. Aulus les Bains is also a spa village - there are hot water springs, and a thermal spa in the village to take advantage of the healing and relaxing properties of the water.

CAMP provides accommodation for all participants on-site, in the form of private, peaceful rooms with mountain views. CAMP also houses advanced facilities available to all residential students - recording facilities, digital video and photography editing suites, rehearsal and performance spaces, fine art studios, a cinema, an arts library and numerous installation spaces. All food and drinks, including local specialities, wine and cheese, are included.

Artists benefit from an intense, catalytic learning experience studying their chosen discipline with one of the most celebrated artists in their field. They live, eat, study and create with their session leader(s) for a week, gaining new skills and insights, building their network, learning new techniques and approaches.

After the session, all participants benefit from our post-course support. We run an art gallery and performance venue in the UK, a publishing house, three record labels, a radio station and are part of an extensive European touring network. We provide ongoing support to all participants, offering exhibition, release, broadcast, touring and publication opportunities, as well as ongoing training and networking.

The Photography Master Retreat

A one-week summer workshop in the south of France

The Photography Master Retreat is a one-of-a-kind, career-enhancing opportunity for established and emerging photographers to engage in artistic introspection and professional critique. It’s not a shooting trip but a rare chance to pause, reflect on your work, and bond with peers who are passionate about photography. It is designed for a select group of 14 artists who have to apply.

The Photography Master Retreat was founded in 2014 as an annual, one-week, immersive workshop in her family home by Martine Fougeron, herself a celebrated photographer and artist, as well as faculty at International Center of Photography, New York. She is one of the three mentors at the retreat. The other two are also renowned in the world of photography, Elisabeth Biondi, Visuals Editor, 1996-2011 at The New Yorker, also an independent curator and writer; Lyle Rexer, a critic and curator – both faculty at the School of Visual Arts, New York.

The Photography Master Retreat 2019 edition will take place July 6-13, 2019 in the South of France, right after the opening week of Les Rencontres d’Arles nearby.

The School for Curatorial Studies is an ambitious and challenging project promoted since 2004 and conceived as a school committed to experimentation and interdisciplinary thinking. The main goals are to spread the knowledge in the field of visual arts and to introduce the students to the professions related to the art world, focusing on contemporary curatorial theory and practice and contemporary museology. The School’s activities are meant for all those interested and passionate in art, graduated students or professionals who want to deepen their knowledge and improve their practical skills. The School’s teaching staff is formed by Italian and international professionals, scholars, historians and art critics of recognized experience. Among them: Matt Williams (curator), Filippo Lotti (Sotheby’s), Chiara Barbieri (Peggy Guggenheim Collection), Francesca Colasante (Pinault Collection), Andrea Goffo (Found. Prada), Nicola Lees (Serpentine London).

The program:

The Summer School in Curatorial Practice will take place during the 58th International Art Biennale Venice. With an interdisciplinary approach, the course provides practical training and experience within museums and exhibition settings. Its international faculty includes curators and museum professionals, artists and critics. The course is designed to increase students understanding of the intellectual and technical tasks of the curator figure. English-taught lectures cover both theoretical and practical topics that go from the history of contemporary visual arts and practices of exhibition-making, to Exhibition Management. The students will participate in weekly activities, such as artist studio visits, tours of exhibition spaces, networking events and workshops. The program culminates with the set up of the exhibition.

The Summer School includes visits of specific art venues all over the city of Venice during the 58th International Art Venice Biennale. A series of selected case studies will offer the students an opportunity to observe the development of contemporary art. The School’s goal is to align these specific theoretical lectures with a practical approach. Besides the theoretical lectures, a series of laboratories and workshops aims to introduce the students to the work of critical text writing, press releases and to structure all the different aspects of publishing. The students will be offered the possibility of a gallery training and of setting up together - with one of our tutors, their exhibition in Venice, as a final project of the course.

The second module is dedicated to individual researching and finalizing the exhibition project. During this period of time the students will have to face practical duties, such as coordinating the artists, managing transportation and insurance policies, promoting and curating the promotional material.

The third module:
August 27th - September 3rd, 2019

The last part of the course lies in the production of the event. During this period of time all the work concerning the final event will take place. The students will coordinate the arrival and the display of the works of art and supervise all the different aspects related to the event, such as promotion, organization, last details about the publication, opening. After the presentation to the public, the student will be given the tools to professionally document the event.

Duration and structure

The course has a duration of 450 hours. The participants will develop themes as well as concepts, organization, acquisition, communication and the concrete implementation of their skills together with the course director and international guests (artists, curators, architects, critics, fine arts scientists and publishers of art journals).

Turps Correspondence Course is an innovative project giving painters a critical perspective and challenging insights into their practice, wherever they are and at any point in their career, in the form of quarterly appraisals aimed at supporting their studio development.

During the year participants will engage in a structured two way process, during which time, they will present works and, in turn, receive feedback from a dedicated mentor as well as the wider tutorial team at Turps Art School.

Applicants must have a personal email address, access to the internet and reasonable facilities to document work digitally.

Participants will be provided with a dedicated online folder at privateviews.com that will be visible to both themselves and the tutorial team. Participants will be expected to upload works, drawings, works in progress, sketchbook pages etc. during the duration of the course. It is important this is an ongoing process that best describes their output as this will allow the mentors to track developments and compile their observations at dedicated feedback points.

The application process is now open and applications will be reviewed on an on-going basis until August 31, 2018, when the process will close until next year. Applicants can expect to hear about the success of their application within four weeks of Turps receiving it.

Decompression Gathering Summer Camp 2018

Can the act of gathering and isolation contribute to articulating new forms of mutual learning and group working? Does experiencing communal life in isolated areas shift social relations? Can the experience of leisure and unproductive daily tasks be a generative process with critical potential? Radical Intention addresses and discusses these issues by setting up Decompression Gathering Summer Camp, a one-week residency of decompression, communal living and group work that takes place at the end of the summer, before urban life and its busyness pick up again.

Invited by Radical Intention, Visiting artist Steve Lambert will be hosting the 2018 Decompression Gathering Summer and he takes decompression seriously. The field of Artistic Activism is rife with overcommitment and hard work is undervalued. There is a high risk of bitterness and burn out, for those who don’t quit entirely. To fight this tendency, the 2018 summer camp will structure fallow time (the irony of structuring fallow time isn’t lost on us), create boundaries to free participants from a continual internet connection, and leisure, wandering, and exploration – metaphorical and otherwise. During the week the group will have the chance to discuss projects and life in a relaxed atmosphere, create new relationships that might evolve, and explore the territory of the Mugello Valley.

Participants are encouraged to gather for daily meals and will have time to share their past research. From there, they will have the opportunity to gather at their leisure, and share what they learn together at the evening meals on the days that follow. The group will investigate folk culture in the area surrounding Corniolo art platform through thematic field trips to enchanted Castles, Giotto’s residence or walking tours through the woods in search of the spring of the Arno River. These educational experiences function as a different tool, and contribute to the overall conversation around decompression while disrupting the schedule of fallow time.

Steve Lambert has worked alongside artists and activists in 15 countries on 4 continents helping them to effect power. Trained in the arts, he is known for large scale, public projects that engage new audiences on difficult topics through the social science of comedy, games, theater, and democratic participation. Lambert is the co-founder and co-director of the Center for Artistic Activism, a research and training institute to help activists be more creative and artists to be more effective. As an artist, Lambert’s work has been shown both nationally and internationally, from art galleries to protest marches to Times Square, featured in four documentary films, and over two dozen books, and collected by museums and The Library of Congress. Lambert has presented at the United Nations several times. His research is included in a United Nations report on the impact of advertising on cultural rights and the basis of a book on popular understandings of capitalism. He is Associate Professor of New Media at SUNY Purchase College.

ALPS ART ACADEMY

International Summerschool for Land and Environmental Art in the Swiss Alps

The second international Alps Art Academy will take place between June 28 and July 7, 2018 in the Safiental (Grisons, Switzerland). Located 1650 meters above sea level in Tenna, the biennial summer academy focuses on Land and Environmental Art.

In a dialogue with the art-historical movement of the 60s and 70s, contemporary approaches to art are located, discussed and further developed with relationship to the Alpine landscape. The Alps Art Academy creates a platform for proposals for a possible future Land Art, which integrates not only landscape and nature but also other media and the wider social context.

An invitation to submit proposals is aimed equally and without age limit at artists who are interested in working with landscape and the environment, as well as theoreticians, facilitators and curators engaged in research on the topic of Land Art. You are invited to apply with a project idea that can be realized during the period in which the summer school takes place. The theme for 2018 is HORIZONTAL - VERTICAL.

The academy offers about 25 participants a 10 day program consisting of workshops, master classes, symposium, field trips, artist talks and presentations, in which they will have the opportunity to explore different aspects and core problems of art production in the landscape and apply what they have learned to their own projects. Participants are accompanied practically and theoretically by international lecturers. The Academy is linked to the Land Art-Biennale Art Safiental (July 7 to October 21, 2018) and offers participants the opportunity to present their projects.

Following the resounding success of the first edition last year with participants from three continents, the International Summer School in Bernau presents the second round from August 14 to 26, 2017. Located just outside Berlin, the building complex is an outstanding example of Bauhaus architecture and serves both as the setting for the course program as well as the subject of its investigations. The Bauhaus's approach to transcending boundaries between the crafts, art, and scholarly research serves as the guiding theme. Working together with eleven well-known international artists, designers, architects, and curators, the intersections between creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic freedom are explored in one-week courses. This year focuses on the relationship between architecture and various other disciplines. The deadline to register is June 30, 2017. Grants are available for students and young professionals.

The course program takes the principle of cooperation to heart and aspires to expand on the functionality-based approach of the Bauhaus, translating and updating it for today's digital era. Perspectives, potentials, and ideas are to be be shared and exchanged in order to learn from and with each other. The aim is to discover novel applications and design possibilities in art, crafts, and society and to put these to use in your own work.

With architect and biologist Petra Gruber, solutions from nature are translated into a technical or artistic context in order to develop a new formal vocabulary for specific materials and structures based on selected research results from the field of biology. In architect and neuroscientist Isabella Pasqualini's course unit, immersive virtual media is used to gain a deeper understanding of a sense of place and space. Artist Mona Jas's course is dedicated to drawing in space. Employing the medium of drawing, a full-scale installation will be developed and implemented in five phases that incorporates the architectural designs of the surrounding neighborhood as narrative. Thibaut de Ruyter offers a course for anyone interested in exhibition development. By presenting the vocabulary and craftsmanship used by architects in their everyday practice, participants gain insight into the planning and organizing of exhibitions. In their course offering, Bill Dietz, Janina Janke, & Julie Rüter explore various directions of musical and acoustic experiments that investigate the mediating function of music in art and life. In the context of Malte Roloff & Santiago da Silva's workshop, the legacy of Swiss architect and former Bauhaus director Hannes Meyer will be examined. Participants will work collaboratively on fulfilling one of Meyer's unrealized projects, realizing it in a different medium and new form. In her two courses, art critic Jennifer Allen will question the relationship between art and architecture.

In addition to the nine, one-week courses, the Summer School is offering for the first time a daily preliminary course open to all participants, instructors, and the general public. American paper artist Eric Gjerde has developed a daily, one-hour format, based on the educational concepts of the famous Bauhaus teacher Josef Albers.

The 2017 Creative Currents Summer Artist Residency is open to emerging and professional Visual, Literary & Performance Artists in all mediums and genres and Scholars and Researchers of all disciplines – both creative and academic – to submit project proposals for work to be developed during the 2 week residency.

2017 Featured Residency Workshop:
Imagined Futures: A Transformative Writing Workshop
presented by Michele Tracy Berger

Drawing on Afro-futurist inspirations, this four day optional workshop invites participants to time travel through their writing lives. We will spend time exploring our past, present and future writing selves. This workshop will help participants deepen a connection to their inner writing self, discover new tools for their writing practice, allow time for new writing to emerge and includes a one hour personal coaching session. Writers at all levels welcomed!
